in 2016. i rented out a small piano studio in east london for nearly the whole year and set out to write an introspective, trendless, and mostly beatless album. inspired by albums from this mortal coil and scott walker, who also sought freedom to work outside of the expectations of their previous work, i limited the instrumentation to mostly an acoustic piano and effects, which left space to expose a lot of emotional vulnerabilities about myself and people close to me. writing lullabies about being a mother in a dystopian world, with pensive words about swimming against the current as a female artist, i felt free enough to tell untold truths that i’ve never felt comfortable talking about within music. free, liberated, empowered. naked.

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

mysterious berlin based label mask preps its debut release titled ‘lemmy’ with four untitled cuts this april. a new series born out of an established german imprint, mask’s enigmatic debut release was produced using a selection of analogue gear including a moog slim phatty, e-mu sp-1200 and nord rack 2x. the a side begins with a track built around a tightly programmed drum loop which subtly builds, laced with mix-slicing hats and sub-low kicks whilst stretched out chords dissipate around a crunchy synth lead. the second production is twisted and dusty, using flanging and reverberated effects to lead towards a distorted breakdown, driven from the depths by gusts of full bodied snares and a growling sub line. on the flip, dulcet tones of a female vocalist join lush melodic chords to cleanse the palette, whilst working within the confines of a subdued yet crisp drum machine groove. the final track then strips things back even further, employing minimalist percussive hits and a warm bass lead, leaving space for its soothing female vocals to do the talking

the sixth compilation of mutated machine music from contort yourself centres around british industrial pioneers nocturnal emissions. the group hack out two thick cuts of oil soaked savagery. gears crunch and chains clatter as drum machines are minced and mangled for demon circuits bloodbath before the reduced and removed bitterness of even the good times are bad. l.i.e.s. main man ron morelli under the guise of u-202 takes on the static of the 83 original, lonesome rhythms fired into a gaping hollow of echo and decay. there is brief respite, very brief, coming in the haunted strings of penelope s fiance. torrent grinds this short break into dust with exe 2 blueprint, a sludge stomper drowned in distortion and dripping with distress. innsyter (l.a. club resource), aka seixlack, calls time with the hazy house bottle smasher, think fog machines and bodies in the dark and youre getting close. off-kilter madness all-round!

nach zwei gefeierten eps veröffentlicht jackson phillips a. k.a. day wave sein langerwartetes debütalbum the days we had. headcase aus dem jahr 2015 mit der durchbruch-single drag überzeugte sofort mit dem träumerischen surfpop, der nachfolger »hard to read« legte noch eine schippe drauf. inspiriert von den gesangsharmonien der beach boys auf der einen und den songstrukturen von joy division und den frühen new order auf der anderen seite, nahm der sänger und multiinstrumentalist die ersten skizzen ganz analog an gitarre, bass und schlagzeug auf.
jetzt folgt also die erste lange platte von phillips musikalischem soloprojekt. obwohl phillips sich selbst als seinen größten kritiker betitelt, hat er das album nur mit unterstützung des toningenieurs mark ranken fast im alleingang eingespielt und produziert. so entstanden elf wunderschöne songs mit gitarrenbasierter melodieführung und voller elektronischer tiefe und wärme. live wächst dieses soloprojekt zu einer band. zusammen mit seinen musikern erzeugt der kalifornier mit seiner weichen und gleichzeitig sehr eingängigen stimme und seinem lässigen charme eine zauberhafte stimmung. die melancholisch-melodiösen songs zünden sofort, wenn phillips und seine jungs auf der bühne stehen.

perm is one of leipzig s most busy producers and performers of electronic music. after releases on shtum, mana all nite, dur, kann and nachtdigital in recent years, holger is more than happy to welcome him with a four-tracker that o ers a deep insight into his vision of timeless techno: airy and yet rmly grounded, with a foggy atmosphere that permeates a vast space of sound. it is trippy and hypnotic but also very bodily and highly energetic. with these qualities it ts very nicely with holger 11 (polo) and 12 (barnt) a perfect closer for this mini triplet series, a concept that has become sort of a trademark for the label.
